Few neuro scientists join together and start analyzing the President’s brain. The results reveal that there are :
2 parts to the brain- Right and Left – Nothing is left in the right side and whatever is there in the left is not right….
Mr Toastmaster, fellow toastmasters and welcome guests:
I am here not to talk about neuroscience, but about the six important Qs associated with it.
*********************************************************
Q Number 1 is our good old friend , IQ or intelligence quotient
IQ implies the ability to innovate, to think outside the box, and to construct new and novel scenarios.
Based on the books and white papers that they had authored, a study was conducted on the IQ of presidents:. The result is:
182 - William Jefferson Clinton [D]
175 - James Earle Carter [D]
174 - John Fitzgerald Kennedy [D]
155 - Richard Milhous Nixon [R]
147 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt [D]
132 - Harry S Truman [D]
126 - Lyndon Baines Johnson [D]
122 - Dwight David Eisenhower [R]
121 - Gerald R. Ford [R]
105 - Ronald Wilson Reagan [R]
098 - George Herbert Walker Bush [R]
091 - George Walker Bush [R]
Q Number 2 is EQ—Emotional Intelligence Quotient
Our clubs motto is to speak and lead. EQ on the other hand is to lead by listening and observing.
David Caruso has said: “It is very important to understand that emotional intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head -- it is the unique intersection of both.”
The early Emotional Intelligence theory was originally developed during the 1970's and 80's by the work and writings of psychologists from Harvard, Yale and other schools.
It is nothing but the ability to understand another’s position. To identify with, to relate to, to understand the impact of group dynamics on the outcome of a situation, to feel and share another’s disappointment and pain. Simplified, it is the ability to listen, and to understand what the other person is REALLY saying.
My best friend is Q Number 3 - HQ—Humor Quotient
The last time I visited my dentist he told me that recent dental research had found a link between clean teeth and heart. Cleaner your teeth, stronger your heart. I told him, Yes Doc, but research has also shown that laughter is also linked to the heart. Whatever heart weakness I get from my teeth, I will compensate that by laughing.
Thomas Wright, a professor of organizational behavior at the University of Nevada thinks that it helps -- to laugh. He did extensive surveys showing that people who keep their sense of humor when unwanted change happens, do better on the job. They also get along better with clients and associates, find more creative solutions to problems, and are more productive than their more serious counterparts.
This quotient characterizes the capacity to see the humor of a situation. It is the ability to know how to relax the tension with a comment, a story or a well-told joke. It is the ability to bounce back after an untoward event.
However, humor and enjoyment can only grow with the right attitude.
Number 4 is CQ—Contentment Quotient
Since we cannot get what we like, let us like what we can get.- is an age old French quote.
This is the ability to view things for the best possible outcome—a glass half full, not half empty—optimism, not pessimism.
It is to feel good about oneself and the role one plays. Included in this quotient is the ability to end a day with a sense of a job well done, with an ability to sleep well and awake feeling rested and ready to take on the challenges of the next day.
CQ implies that one is secure enough in one’s own sense of self-worth not to be overly threatened by adversaries, disagreements, or challenges.
It is worth to mention Socrates here, Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty.
Number 5 is GQ—Generosity Quotient
Simply put, it is the joy and satisfaction that accompanies watching the success of others.
In an organizational setting , it implies freely giving credit where credit is due, recognizing that “there is no end to what can be accomplished if one does not care who gets the credit.”
There is another aspect to GQ, the ability to forgive and forget.
As Mother Theresa, says “If you can't feed a hundred people, then just feed one.
Number 6 is WQ—Wisdom Quotient
Wisdom is the understanding that what you know is nothing at all and what you imagine is everything else.
This is the ability to sum up a set of circumstances and know when to act.
Simply put, it is knowing when to pounce. Wisdom entails the ability to know when enough information is in hand to take the decision—the famous 80/20 rule; with 80 percent of the information in hand, to act, without worrying about the other 20 percent.
WQ recognizes the importance of treating people fairly and consistently, recognizing the practical aspects of being nice to people on the way up, knowing it may actually be important on the way down.
In closing, let us briefly look at the case of Karthik Rajaram. He proved beyond doubt that he had a very high IQ. See what happened. In spite of his high Q, he did not have the right balance of the other Qs.
